PROOF THAT THE EASTERN CAPE CAN COMPETE NATIONALLY IN SA!!
By Martino Ferreira
Being raised in the Eastern Cape, I always wanted to get my RW Kudu in my own province. Also, being a PH, every time my client shot his trophy, I had this hopefull, burning sensation in my heart
- one day, one-day ...
I have shot plenty of kudu in my life, but my dream became reality on the 10th June 2004 when I shot my record 57 inch EC bull!!! This is comfortably within both EC and Greater Kudu Rowland Ward to say the least.
I booked a hunt on Hayden Krige's farm in the Steytlerville district, where spekboom and aloe cover hills and mountains. It was clear that there was food and flora in abundance for kudu to graze on. Furthermore, the landowner only allows 5 Kudu to be taken annually on his land. Credit must be given to Hayden for this and I wish other farmers would follow this conservation example to ensure us dedicated hunters those big bulls. This can only have a positive effect for the future.
We left early on the freezing winter morning to walk and stalk valleys and ravines. For about an hour we only saw cows until we spotted him standing on top of a hill. The horns, even from far away, raised my heartbeat. I've never seen a bull with such horns in the area. I froze and wondered which way to go as, fortunately for me, he came down the hill following a cow. I walked to a better position on the slope of the hill and waited, hoping for his appearance. I was lucky and perfectly placed when, after 20 minutes, the cow appeared off to my side followed by the monster. He wasnt interested in anything else but the cow in front of him. This made things difficult as, every time she moved, he followed. The split second moments he did stand still, he was behind thick bush.
Eventually I had a clear shot and took it at 160 meters with my newly acquired CZ 375H&H. A 200 gr GS HP Bullet ended his long-lived career as a stud bull. Looking at the condition of his teeth, it is doubtful that he would have survived next year's winter. Packing him out down the mountain to the Land Cruiser was hard work and an end to one of the best hunting days of my life.
Besides the excitement and quality of my trophy, I was very impressed and satisfied with the combination of 375H&H and the GS 200gr bullet. It really shoots flat, something we in the Eastern Cape need. Bullet performance was exactly what I wanted and as predicted from the technical advice given by GS.
Thank you Hayden, thank you CZ and thank you to the GS Team for helping in realising my dream.
