This is the rifle GS Custom Bullets used to develop and test the 120 grain 7mm HV bullet (285120HV.071). It is chambered in 7x57, has a one in 10.5 inch twist and an 18" unprofiled blank barrel. This leads up to a story with a difference as this is not the sort of rifle one lugs up a mountain in search of mountain reedbuck.

As it was the only one in 10.5 twist 7x57 rifle available, that is what we wound up doing. Unfortunately we were driven from our mountain hunt on July 15 2000 by snow, after shooting one reedbuck with the new bullet! The other guys in the group got another four. Here we are coming down the minus eight degrees mountain, well and truly frozen, but with the prospect of hunting springbuck in the relative warmth of the valley below. Wrong again! After shooting six springbuck with the new bullet, our hunt was terminated by a snow blizzard on the Karoo plains in the Cradock district.

This is only the second time that Pierre Martin Lombaard, on the left in the photo, has seen conditions like this on his farm "Newlands". If you are wondering why everyone is squinting - driven snow stings!

Aaaah..a warm place at last. This was the first time that the entire group with us on a bullet test hunt used GS Custom bullets. In total we took 16 buck on the day, consisting of 5 mountain reedbuck and 11 springbuck. Total meat loss on the lot was less than 10 kg. From left to right: Ulrich (Apprentice gunsmith with GS Custom Gunsmithing)- 220 Swift, Gustav - 7x57, Johan - 220 Swift, Gerard (Bullet designer for GS Custom Bullets)- 7x57, Rudi - 30-06 and Arno - 7x57.
